It was a glorious day in Elgin at South Hill wine estate. People came to celebrate a wedding, they came they saw and they partied! Ooi!

Every now and again I peruse thru the interwebs and look at various photographers work, not many people inspire me except for the masters who were my original inspiration. Unlike the Jasmine Stars of the world, sure they have made an incredible success of their careers in a very short time and that’s purely down to great business savvyness but when it comes to producing work that makes me go “GAWK!” They are nowhere near me producing that sound.
A recent discovery was Mr Peterson, Jonas Peterson click his name to go have a look at his work, phenomenal work from this Aussie. Or click on his image below to view his work online. Such random artness, love it! Did I say Aussie, apologies, he lives there but hails from Scandinavia me thinks, I speak under correction
Then of course there is my original wedding photographer inspiration, the one and only Mr Ascough, Jeff Ascough. he epitomizes documentary wedding capture. Elegance with a strong sense of composition. He is based in Lancashire, UK. Interestingly enough, both him and Jonas has recently made statements on their blogs, concerning the growing state of wedding albums and pictures, especially from the high end one stop bridal blog shop type sites, that are filled with decor, shoe shots, plants, stationery etc all under the guise of real weddings, what happened to the people? Is the wonderful celebration of devoting your life to someone special not more important that vintage lanterns? I guess everyone has a market and they need to showcase what the customer wants and that is why they are drawn to the site in the first place, ideas!

Now we get to some local inspiration, my brother, Jean-Pierre Uys. I started photography long before he did, I helped and taught him a lot from my own experience but he was the first to concentrate purely on weddings. I wanted to go into fashion and he went into weddings. Now he has made a massive impression on the wedding photography industry in South Africa and I’m still a nobody in any industry, go figure But still I find inspiration in his images, gorgeously captured and superbly edited. No wonder he is at the very top of his game! Proud of you my little big brother!

Next up we have a fellow South African who now lives and works in NYC! Otto Schulze has been shooting for a couple of years and I especially love his artistic approach to shooting a wedding, unique angles and reflections make up his repertoire of expression, simply gorgeous.

As a tip to future brides and grooms, if you are having the photographer for the full evening it really pays to invest a little bit in mood lighting at the reception, it just makes the photos so much more exciting. As photographers we have to deal with what we get most of the time and if there isn’t much to work with within time constraints we can’t do much

These two lovely cats got married over at Eaglevlei Estate. Maryke’s dad is stationed in Afghanistan fighting for justice, so a big ‘whoo-haa’ to him and his boys! Be sure to click the link at the end of the post to view more images from this fun wedding!
