Every time it is so difficult for me to make a selection of 10 images to enter this competition. I went thru thousands of photos to get to 10 and I’m still not entirely sure that I made the right choice, with photography it’s or any other art, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You will end up with a mix of what you like and what think the judges will like, it’s always like that.

First up are my 10 entries, followed by the ones who nearly made it. It was very very difficult to make and it took me hours of just staring at my screen and doing a bit of eeny meeny miny moe, some help from people on my facebook page and my girl Liezl.

I am very honored to represent this amazing range of flash equipment, they are in my mind the Ferrari’s and Bugatti Veiron’s or professional flash equipment, simply superb! They are represented in South Africa by the sunshineco. They also hire a wide range of equipment to professionals and they have a super efficient service department. From lighting to camera gear, the full kit in one place.

Complied by Alan Taylor it paints a very poignant picture of the world at war and the consequences and the people, click here to view it the entire collection.

Here are some of my favorites. This first one was shot by Ansel Adams in one of the Japanese “concentration camps” in the USA, officially labeled internment settlements via Executive Order 9066 as issued by Pres. Roosevelt. That is one thing that really gets me about the world war 2, the Germans where severely persecuted and prosecuted for their concentration camps but it’s quite alright for the Americans to do something similar and then upon that humiliation to Americans of Japanese decent, go bomb the hell out of Japan with not only two atomic bomb drops but they killed over 100 000 thousand civilians in one air raid with their incendiary bombing on March 10, 1945. One night! That is more people that were killed in the first atomic bomb drop over Hiroshima. This is the really interesting bit, it took 1700 tonnes of bombs to destroy Tokyo and kill over 100 000 people and only 600 milligrams of the 64kg Uranium core ignited and released energy that caused the destruction of Hiroshima. Ok I dont want to get too preachy now, but please if you have time, go to the site and browse thru the library of images, there are some truly stunning pictures, I know this is not really an upbeat post but one I felt I had to share. Please this also goes with a warning, there are some graphic images that might upset the sensitive viewer.

Images that might be of interest to those that do not like doom and gloom are the color photographs used for propaganda, as seen below, really stunning images.

Locally at ORMS. Everything on the lens is fully manual, no auto focus so forget about it! Unfortunately the tilt locking switch was not working properly so I had to tape the tilt from moving around during long exposures. The shift was working just fine and it was quite a challenge to focus in the dark but shooting and checking on your LCD screen does help with that. So the proof is in the pudding as they say and I must admit, these moonlit pictures are way cool! I WANT ONE! The lens that is.

Unfortunately these lenses are cest tres expensive! Round $1800 in the states (R14750.00) and locally in a shop it will set you back around R 20 000 large ones!! That is quite an investment for a lens that is slow to shoot with, meaning you need to time to set up a shot and shoot it, not a point and shoot lens, as I said, everything is manual on the lens, even the aperture has to be turned old school on the lens it self, which is awesome and that’s why I love it!

The above two images clearly shows the difference between the actual lens created effect and the effect created by a popular software, the software does well but cannot replicate the distant light bokeh effect, you can only do that with a lens. The lens even retains the light sparkle (the star effect created by a light into a lens). The lens has a rotation function as well. Only the last image in this post was made with some rotation, admit-tingly I only stumbled upon the rotation function today!

The following file shows the difference in rotation, its a gif so it will load and has two images that rotate, one is at 45 degrees and one at 90 degrees. I did not play around too much with the rotation last night as the tilt function could not lock properly, and it was cold and my hands were freezing!

All the images were shot at night with available light on a Nikon D3. Hand held. NOT! Ok I’m good but not “that” good..

Thank you for the kind support. It is always encouraging and helpful to hear of the joy my work brings to people as well as comments and words of admiration. Not many people know this but I have averages around one to two free wedding shoots per year to some lucky individuals. the circumstances for which are very very specific and special. Usually involving an exotic location abroad to which I would love to travel, so keeping that spirit in mind. I propose, please write to me, tell me your story and you could win a free wedding shoot and here comes the but! But only if all other expenses are catered for and it will need to fall into an exotic location of my choice. In other words. if you are getting married in a place where I would really love to travel to, then you might just be the lucky couple!

Places I want to travel to:
- New York City
- Japan (anywhere in Japan)
- Most of the exotic islands in the Pacific area of Hawaii
- Iceland
- Thailand
- Vancouver
- France
- Sweden

And then I am open to other suggestions. Looking forward to hearing from you! Ciao

Here for your pleasure, some weddings I have shot abroad:
